JAS is delighted to announce that former UK National Security Adviser and future Ambassador to the United States, Sir Kim Darroch, will join us for an off the record breakfast on Tuesday 8 December.
A diplomat for 30 years, Kim has had a ringside seat at some of the greatest events (and gravest moments) of recent political history. Private Secretary to three successive ministers of state. Head of the Eastern Adriatic department dealing with the break up of Yugoslavia and Bosnia conflict.  Press spokesman for Robin Cook. EU adviser to Tony Blair and serving in Number 10 at the height of the greatest political moments of the Blair government.  UK’s representative to the EU between 2007 and 2012.  Most recently National Security Adviser, a post he left in September. Sir Kim has spent the last four years overseeing the government’s national security machinery, setting up the National Security Council, and advising the Prime Minister on the most pressing foreign policy and national security issues of the day – from supporting the PM in multiple terrorist crises and kidnappings, to the failed Syria parliamentary vote for airstrikes in 2013, the collapse into civil war in Libya, to navigating the UK’s relationships with world leaders, from President Obama and Angela Merkel, to Vladimir Putin and the House of Saud.
We hope you’ll be able to join us as Sir Kim shares some of the highlights of his career, and reflects on some of the challenges facing policy makers and the international community in 2015.
Sir Kim takes up post as HM ambassador to the US in January so no doubt he’ll be looking to JAS for advice and top tips on what his priorities should be one he arrives in DC.  This will be a great opportunity to hear his early thoughts on the challenges of the role (and the fascinating year he has ahead).
